Best Family Campground in Florida
The best family campground in Florida is Ft Desoto State Park. At least that's my opinion. We just returned from a three day camping trip and we had such a great time!
When it comes to families Fort Desoto State Park has two different sections. The first one is the main campground which are for families including those with kids. The second one is the primitive youth campground which is for youth groups. The youth campground is for non-profit groups and has the capacity of 30 people. It's also by the water so the older kids just roam free searching for horseshoe crabs, fish, shells and even sea horses! I didn't see any but my kids were super excited about catching sea horses!
Since we were with a homeschooling group we stayed at the primitive youth campground. The area consists of numerous shaded trees for climbing, picnic tables and large fire pits. There are restrooms each with two stalls for both men and women as well as one for families. In addition, there are combined outdoor cold showers - way too cold for me so we ended up driving to the main campground for a hot water shower.
Even though we have never stayed at the main campground we always end up going there. That's because we usually forget something so we need to go to their store (don't be like me - have a good family packing camping list). The campground is also beautiful and some of the sites are on the water. Just keep in mind that during the high season Fort Desoto park reservations are not easy to make. So be sure to plan way ahead of time. You don't want to be disappointed.
One of the Best Family Campgrounds in Florida.
Another reason why I believe Fort Desoto is the best family campground in Florida is because of it's numerous, spectacular views and scenery and 7 miles of waterfront. Yes! 7 miles! Being there during the winter months will take your breath away. The cool breeze, the birds chirping, the Pelicans diving in the ocean and the blue skies is almost impossible to describe.
We always make sure that we bring our bikes since there are numerous trails which are very wide and safe for the kids. As we ride the trails there are informational signs where you can learn about plants and animals in the area.
We would ride our bikes then stop to rest at each informational sign. At that point we would take a well deserved drink, sometimes eat a little snack and discuss the informational sign. The perfect balance of exercise, education and relaxation. We couldn't ask for more.
To make it even more cool some of the signs would make suggestions for the reader to get involved. For instance, the Brazilian Pepper Tree is an extremely invasive plant. Their suggestion if for visitors to remove them when they are not fruiting. Another awesome activity for the kids to do!
History at Fort Desoto
Of course I cannot neglect to mention the history at Fort Desoto. There is so much to learn and see about Hernando Desoto, the military fort on Mullet Key and the remains of Battery Laidley. You will also see the last four 12-inch M 1890-MI mortars remaining in North America!
Family Camping in Florida
Florida has amazing campgrounds. There are so many to choose from. Given the fact that Fort Desoto camping site is so close to where we live in Sarasota it's both convenient and an spectacular place for us to camp at. So for now I can easily say that Fort Desoto is the best family campground in Florida.
